Fruit Baskets I 2003

In 2002 I arrived in Vienna with the intent to live here. Thanks to my network of Latin American friends I managed to get four jobs as a babysitter. The people I worked for were all economically well-off Austrian families. In my free time I used to observe the interior of those families’ homes, their spatial distribution, decor and family pictures.
I tried to decipher the codes of those still lives from my artistic perspective. What interested me the most was that all the rooms in the different homes had something in common and that that commonality related to my previous artwork.
Previously I had devoted myself to the theme of still life and visual language linked to social issues such as land redistribution after land reform and the export of agricultural products to northern markets.
I dedicated myself to successively document the fruit baskets in the homes of the families I worked for. These families purchased fruit that had been produced in my continent and later been exported to Europe.
I thought that the presence of fruit in places of everyday use gave those homes something exotic and fulfilled the same role of a postcard.
